Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They can easily become bored and find ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not engaged with them often enough. If not properly socialized macaws may become aggressive and even bite. It is crucial to have clear boundaries set so the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that are a joy to play with, interact with and climb. They should spend at least 2 to 3-hours each day in the outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They enjoy playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local eateries and bars. They are not just a wonderful pet, but they are they are also a great companion for children.
They can be extremely loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They are capable of high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be disruptive in apartments and condos or near young children who may be frightened by their noise.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are hard to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is known, pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. This isn't a simple process, and it is essential that the pet's owner is patient and realizes that this isn't an undertaking to be taken lightly. Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to cease performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists were hopeful that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to go back to the sea.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They are a danger to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, vowed to develop an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could live the remainder of her life receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean, not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
As with any species of animal captive, a gold and blue macaw's well-being is based on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds need high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In captivity, a macaw well-fed can expect to live for up to 60 years. This majestic bird also needs plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been critiqued for the quality of the food they provide to killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and despite being threatened in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some say is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, but her health is declining. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare groups who want to see her released to the wild. Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has pledged to transfer the whale from her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
